What to Expect from Your First Online Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel daunting, especially if you have never done it before. If you are wondering what an online session actually looks like, how it works practically, and what you need to do to prepare, this article explains the process from start to finish.
Before your first session, we will have already had a short introductory call – a free, no-obligation conversation of about 15 minutes where we talk about what has brought you to therapy and whether I might be the right fit. This is not an assessment. It is a chance for you to ask questions and get a sense of how I work.
If we decide to go ahead, I will send you a contract by email. This covers confidentiality, session logistics, fees, cancellation policy, and boundaries. Both of us keep a copy. There is nothing hidden in it – it is there to make the process transparent and safe for both of us.
Your first full session is an initial assessment, which lasts up to 90 minutes. This is longer than a regular session to give us time to talk about your personal history, your family background, what has brought you to therapy now, and what you are hoping to get from the process. I will also carry out a risk assessment. This is standard practice and is about making sure I can support you safely.
The session takes place on Google Meet. You will receive a link by email before the session. You do not need to download any software – Google Meet works in your browser. All you need is a stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space where you will not be overheard or interrupted.
You do not need to prepare anything. You do not need to have a list of things to say or a clear idea of what you want from therapy. Many people begin with "I do not really know where to start" – and that is completely fine.
After the initial assessment, if we both agree to continue, regular sessions are 50 minutes, once a week. Sessions are at the same time each week to create consistency and routine.
Payment is by bank transfer. The initial assessment is £90. Ongoing sessions are £70. I do not currently accept insurance.
What if my internet drops during a session?
If your connection fails, I will wait for you to reconnect. If the issue persists, we can continue the session by telephone as a backup. Your session time is protected regardless.
Can anyone else be in the room during my session?
Ideally, no. For therapy to work, you need to feel safe to speak freely. I ask that you find a private space where you will not be overheard or interrupted. If this is difficult, we can talk about practical options.
What if I do not want to continue after the first session?
There is no obligation to continue. The initial assessment is a standalone session. If either of us feels it is not the right fit, there is no pressure to proceed.
If you are thinking about starting therapy and want to find out more, book a free introductory call. It is a short, informal conversation with no obligation.
